Trouble with a Purchase!!!

Hello Everyone,

Two weeks ago I had gone to a large furniture chain here in Wisconsin, called American. They only have these furniture stores here in Wisconsinand Minnesota. I had purchased a bedroom set and a new kitchen table and chairs. I spent $4600. I waited 2 weeks for them to order the products and deliver them to my home. Well that's when the problems started. One day before delivery I got a phone call telling me that 2 of the chairs for the table were not going to be delivered because the sales person did not get permission to take the chairs that were on display from another American. To make matters worse the manager was not available until Friday and the delivery was scheduled for Thursday. I told them to deliver the furniture but I was going to need the two chairs ASAP.

Well delivery day arrived and I had to take off work in the afternoon to be home. I patiently waited for them to show up. They finally showed up and started bringing in the furniture. They brought the table in first, minus the two missing chairs. I asked the delivery guys if they had the leaf for the table, they said no. I was upset because the sales person said that the leaf would be with the table ( they couldn't find it at the store when we were there, and we had to take the display table, because it was being discontinued). I then followed the guys into the bedroom to watch them set up the bed. They assembled the bed and then asked me if I had a box spring for the bed. I told them no, because the sale person told me I did not need a box spring for the bed I had ordered. Well the delivery guy said I was going to need one. After the guys left, I took a look at the furniture, and saw that they didn't assemble the storage drawers on the foot board correctly and they scratched the top of the table when they were bringing it in to the house.

I called American right away and was told that someone would call me back before 9pm. That never happened. I then called first thing Friday morning and spoke with the manager and told him all that had happened. He told me he would look into everything and call me back. About 2 hours later he returned the call and gave me options as far as fixing all the problems I had. I was very pleased to find out that they were going to send me a box spring at no cost, and he was upset that the sales person even told me that the box spring was not needed. He also gave me the option of either coming in and picking out a different table or having them order me a brand new one of the table I originally picked out. I chose to go with a new table of the one I picked out, but I have to wait 12 weeks for them to deliver it. He also scheduled a repairman to come out and fix the bed for me. As far as the chairs go he told me he ordered me two brand new chairs from the manufacture and they are on there way. So my only question is. Do you feel I should ask for either some of my money back? or ask for the mirror that goes with my dresser at no cost for all the trouble I went through??

  1. Wow Sara, talk about a bad day! I'm sorry to hear that you went through so much trouble. Sales people and delivery guys can be such pains in the caboose! I've never had to deal with that too much because I choose to take everything out myself. That way I know if I'm the one who messes something up. (Not to mention I get to keep what they charge for delivery!) The only thing I ever had delivered was my fridge so many years back. At that time I didn't know anyone with a truck or anyone who knew anyone with a truck. But in your situation, I would definitely ask for some kind of compensation. If they caused you that many problems, it would only be decent of them to try and make sure they keep you as a customer, especially since you're spending so much money doing business with them as it is. Even if they can't give you money back or an extra piece for free (which would really be nothing considering the situation!), then they should at least give you a really big discount on your next purchase from them. All in all, I think their customer service was sorely lacking. You're entitled to something. Hope it all works out!

  3. Hi Sara,
I agree with Yolanda ask for the whole enchilada! For the trouble you were put through they should give you more than what he as already offered, after all you paid them $4600.00 and waited 2 weeks and then another 12.

  5. I would ask for the mirror or something that you want. This should have been a happy time for you not a stressful time!
